FEATURE: The Man behind NSTP, An Extraordinary Man

It was fine Saturday morning, and it was my first day in my NSTP class. Exactly 9:00am sharp he walked in to our NSTP class room 410, it was him, a man in his 50’s I supposed, I’m not sure, I don’t ask people’s personal details, his hair with touch of grays on it, his skin where wisdom and experience are written, that was him, I get curious with, who as the days go by, I get to know a little. But one thing is for sure, there is something special with this man, something that makes all of us and the rest of the people around him, give him the highest respect he deserves.

I only knew very little about him, besides the fact that he is my Math 5, Statistics professor and my NSTP coordinator.

For academic excellence and achievements, teaching experiences, seminars and workshop attended, finished courses, oh boy! I’ve seen it, it’s a long list and I tell you, you don’t want me to go through it one by one. He is truly a man full of wisdom and knowledge.

He is not just a professor, nor a Doctor of Education, or a man of Philosophy. He is a friend, who cracked silly jokes. A father, who gives advice, who scold you sometimes and of course who will never stop in giving an encouragement to each and everyone of us. He is truly and inspiration and with that, I am literally grateful that I met him, grateful that I am one of his students, one of the lucky people he shared his wisdom and knowledge with.

To him, on behalf of Makabansa NSTP group, we would like to extend our utmost gratitude to Doctor Juanito Galos, the man behind NSTP, beyond extraordinary man. Thank you so much sir!

Hats off!!

Fire Prevention Month: Fire Management Drill

Barangay Kamputhaw Bureau of Fire Protection conducted a Fire Prevention/ Fire Management Drill spearheaded by SFO1 Romeo T. Birao at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation last March 4, 2017. This is in line with R.A 9514 Presidential proclamation no. 115-A.

The seminar aims to spread awareness on how we can prevent fire incidents due to the growing numbers of fire incidents in our world today due to lack of knowledge and lack of preparation in situation like this.

The said seminar started with a very informative lecture on how we can prevent fire break out in our household, how to put off fire, safety precautions on using LPG, how to use fire extinguishers, and what to do in case of fire break out.

SFO1 Birao also discussed the possible reasons and factors as to why there is a delay for some fire fighters when it comes to responding to any fire break out. He also discussed about the different types of fires and the most effective ways in putting them off.

The afternoon part of the seminar was the simulation and application of what we have learned during the lecture. All of the activities were safely done at the University field.
The simulation were as follows:

* Manage Fire by using Fire Extinguishers

* Manage to Extinguish Fire (LPG)

* Manage to Extinguish Fire using Water Basin

* Manage to Extinguish Fire using Fire Truck Hose

All of the NSTP student were able to demonstrate and participated the said activity. It was indeed a very informative and very useful seminar for all of us because we will never know when these emergency happen.

We were indeed glad that NSTP class includes these seminars and training to our curriculum.

Disaster and Emergency Safety Skills Training

The University of Southern Philippines Foundation NSTP class attended the Disaster and Emergency Safety Skills Training spearheaded by Rescue 177 Corps of Instructions Representative last February 10, 2017 at the University covered court area.

USPF Senior High School students and USPF NSRC members also attended the said training. It started with a lecture on Basic Bandaging Technique, High angle Rescue, Rappelling, CPR, and Emergency Rescue transfer or ERT.

After the lecture the students were split into several groups for the simulation and application of what we have learned from the lecture. The first simulation was rappelling wherein we were taught the different ways to descend from the building going down. We were taught the parts of the harness and how to use it properly.
Some of the students were nervous, some were excited and some even refused to try the rappelling simulation due to acrophobia or fear of heights. Yet everyone must try because all simulation was graded.

Second simulation was the Emergency Rescue Transfer. We had a demonstration on how to transfer a victim with and without the stretcher, though the one who played the victim was heavy it was a total fun and informative training.

Third and last simulation was how to do the CPR or cardiopulmonary resuscitation. We were taught the proper to do it to the victim in case of cardiac arrest or whenever the victim’s heart stopped pumping on its own. We do the simulation wherein there was the one who played the victim and the rescuer and vice versa.

It was very intensive training that our strength was almost drained to the lowest level, tiresome, yes, but it was all worth it! It was very informative and indeed very useful to us because we may never know when these emergency will happen to us and we must be prepared and ready at all times.

Thank you Rescue 177 corps!

Battle Against Drugs!

We had this seminar on the 4th of February, 2017 at exactly 9:00 am and ended on 4 pm. We had 2 guests speakers from Mr. Anthony Guttierez who gave us an overview of the current state of Drug related issues our country is facing today and Dr. Danny Bornales who is the main speaker of that day's seminar.

Dr. Bornales shared his experiences as a victim and a person who became a better version of himself through the help of his strong faith in God.

He also discussed what are the different types of drugs, why people resort to using it and it's harmful effects to real people especially on how it destroys someone's life.

I am pleased to be part of this training and I had a lot of learnings on that day. I realized that drug addiction is not limited to the things I know that even something that I always see in my house like inhalants can be source of drug addiction. I was also able to share the learnings I had with my friends and family which makes me feel like I am also part of this battle against drugs.

As a student of NSTP, I am responsible for my society and I should start change by letting others know and help prevent drug addiction in my community. This is one of the reasons why I love this subject

Let’s Stay Clean, Green and Pristine

The University of the Philippines Foundation (USPF) NSTP class attended an environmental awareness seminar spearheaded by a non-profit organization “PANAGTAMBAYAYONG”. This was held last November 11, 2016 at the University Covered court.

The seminar tackled on many environmental issues that could harm our environment and to our own lives respectively.

Solid waste management was discussed by Vice Mayor Artillano of San Francisco Camotes, an outstanding mayor awardee. He explained about the importance of proper waste disposal and how we can still make use of it. VM Artillano and his group have started with a waste analysis of the entire Cebu’s waste percentage versus the land designated for it, Inayawan land field. They have realized that waste has increased exponentially over the years while the land remains exactly the same, at times decreasing. Thus, their group took the initiative to mobilize the community to take part on finding the solution and implementing it. Finally, they have sorted out the solution to solid waste management through recycling, vermin composting and waste segregation. To mobilize everyone, the group has decided and implemented some citations and penalties to whom ever caught not following the community rule through community service.

Buss Rapid Transit (BRT) was lectured by Attorney Raffy Yap. He explained about the current survey standing of traffic here in Cebu. Based on the survey, Cebu has marked as the number one in the worst traffic in the whole nation. This has bothered our local government thus, empowering the CITOM to find for a solution. The current proposed project they have is the BRT or Bus Rapid Transit project. This can be compared to the MRT in Manila but instead of making use of trains, it will make use of 176 private busses. A map showing the stations in Bulacao, Ayala and Talamban for example were already put into place. There were still proposed designs of the station that is still on review. The main goal of this project is to minimize the traffic by providing a fast, safe, elegant and affordable public transportation to the commuters.

The lecture on Renewable Energy was discussed by Mr. Navia from Sanlakas. He explained the difference between renewable energy and Coal Plants. Based on studies, coal mining is not considered as a renewable energy. However, the media seems to take this as renewable and has plants of coal has already rooted the region. There are still more Coal plant constructions that are waiting to be approved. And according to his field work, citizens who lived nearby the plants are in high health risk of respiratory diseases and illnesses. His message ended encouraging everyone to be proactively disagree about these pending plants constructions through signature campaign.

The seminar aims to spread awareness in the aggressive climate change and how we, the students and the citizens of our country can help in our own ways to make our environment clean, green and pristine.
